  The history of the city dates back in the VII th century BC when small tribes of the local plain decided to get togheter in a democratic form. Rome was considered the rightful descendant of Athens as for its juridical system that was born in Greece. The city had a past of democratic form before the time of Augustus when, fighting against his uncle s favourite man, Marcantonio, defeated him and Cleopatra in the waters in front of Greece and became the first emperor of Roman Empire. This choice changed rapidly the course of the city that became not only the capital of the empire but also the resident home of the Emperor. The long history of the Romans is visible everywhere in the city from the famous Colosseum to Imperial Fori (trade and political square). After the Vth century when the Roman Empire had moved the center of its power to Costantinopoli, the city was sacked several times by barbarian populations coming from North Europe. Only the Church defended the city and stood against all its enemies. Peter, follower of Christ, moved from Palestine to Rome to found the church of Christ and since then, the city is the pulsing heart of Christian religion, the most influential religion in the world. The presence of the Vatican has led the city during the centuries to be "dressed" by all the most important artists of the world at that time. The Vatican Museums and the Peter Chatedral hold some of the finest artifacts and masterpieces that are nowadays envied by the entire world.
