Ciggiano - Civitella in Val di Chiana
This settlement was probably born as vicus romano, quoted in documents of the 11th century as Castello con Pieve. There are scarce traces of the old walls with keeps, contained in an ovoidal area with a rectangular square in the centre and a well. It lies in an enchanting position along the Strada Vecchia Senese, Ciggiano, in the more historical peroid, owes its fortune to the prosperity of the surrounding hills, where still today an interesting production of oil and wine is carried out. We point out the church of S. Biagio, a single hall of uncertain origins, which became a parish church in 1465, where there is the beautiful Mazzeschi alter of the mid 17th century; The church of S. Maria, built about 1635 with a colonnade along the transhumance route of the sheperds for the Maremma, with an arcade destined as protection for wayfarers. Finally, noteworthy for its singularity is the church of S. Pietro, next to Villa Cardinali, at Maiano, of the Middle Ages, renovated in 1863 with an assembly of various stony elements and different architectural shapes.
