Maggiore Lake

Maggiore Lake

Maggiore Lake is located in North Italy, at the border with Switzerland. It’s one of the many precious places to be discovered in Italy and the beauty of the place is doubled by the baroque architecture of the hotels that remind of a peaceful life by the lake. In the heart of the lake are located three islands: Isola Bella, Isola Maggiore and Isola dei Pescatori that will leave you in awe during our excursions on the lake. The Isola Maggiore and Isola Bella belong to one of the oldest families in Italy: the Borromeo, who also named the islands called Borromeo islands. This family, starting from the XVI th century had control of the lake through the Visconti ruling over Milan. The family in centuries of power have built astonishing buildings in the middle of the lake that today can be visited by our boat tours. Nevertheless, all the area is of great interest for its forests and the high Alps that make the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable landscape. Two more locations to be visited are the Rocca of Angera of the Borromeo family on the southeastern side of the lake (reachable only by boat tours) and the Eremo of Saint Catherine. The Eremo is a monastery built on the eastern shoreside of the lake. The monastery’s nuns during their daily chores create homemade medicines for many health problems by utilizing the plants from their gardens. A visit to this place of holiness and peace should not be missed.
